Serdar Sönmez
Member of Executive Council
Adıyaman Üniversitesi, Adıyaman, Türkiye
I obtained my MSc (Ectinosomatidae fauna along Turkey's Mediterranean coasts) and PhD (Taxonomic revision and zoogeography of Miraciidae species along Turkey's mediolittoral zones) from Balıkesir
University. I am currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Biology at Adıyaman University, specializing in Systematic Zoology, Molecular Phylogeny, and Genetic Diversity. My research
focuses on the taxonomy, phylogeny, and evolutionary relationships of copepods, particularly Harpacticoida, using molecular and morphological methods to address questions of biodiversity and
speciation.
I have led a project investigating the taxonomic and genetic diversity of widely distributed Harpacticoida along Turkish coasts. My work involves advanced techniques such as genetic barcoding,
phylogenetic reconstruction, and microscopic analyses.
I have participated in national Taxonomy Summer Schools, which provide essential training in taxonomy and phylogenetics for researchers and students. I also supervise graduate students,
contributing to their academic and professional development in systematic zoology.
I am one of the founders and the webmaster of the TCRC (Turkish Copepoda Research Collection) website (https://copepoda.com.tr), which aims to bring together researchers and collections related to copepods in Türkiye under a single platform.
As a member of the Executive Council, I am committed to contributing to initiatives that enhance collaboration, accessibility, and visibility in the field of copepod research.
